Manuka is the honey most people reach for when they want something more than a sweetener. It has a grading system, a marketing budget, and thirty years of head start. Sidr has none of those things, and gets compared to it constantly. So it is worth setting out where the two genuinely differ — including the places Manuka comes out ahead.
They come from completely different trees
Manuka honey comes from bees foraging Leptospermum scoparium, a shrub native to New Zealand and parts of Australia. Sidr honey comes from Ziziphus spina-christi, a thorny tree that grows across the Arabian Peninsula and the Horn of Africa, and which in Yemen grows uncultivated in the valleys of Hadramout.
That difference in plant is the whole story. The nectar is different, so the sugar profile is different, so the taste, texture and price are all different too.
Manuka has a grading system. Sidr does not.
This is the single most important practical difference, and it favours Manuka. UMF and MGO grading gives a buyer a number to check. There is no equivalent for Sidr honey. Nobody has built one, which means the burden of proof falls entirely on the seller.
What the laboratory work shows
A 2011 study compared nine honeys, Yemeni Sidr and Manuka among them, against nine bacterial species under identical conditions. Yemeni Sidr recorded the lowest minimum inhibitory concentration against Gram-positive bacteria of everything tested — 5 to 10% by weight, against a range of 5 to 20% across all the honeys.
The authors named Yemeni Sidr, Taify Sidr, Shaoka and Manuka as the four strongest overall. Sidr did not win everything: against Gram-negative bacteria, Shaoka honey performed better.
Rarity works differently for each
Manuka is produced at scale. New Zealand exports thousands of tonnes a year, and production is actively managed with hives moved to plantations timed for the bloom.
Sidr is not farmed in that way. The trees grow wild, they flower for a few weeks a year, and beekeepers move hives to the trees rather than the other way round. A hive yields a fraction of what a commercial apiary produces. That scarcity is real, and it is most of why the honey costs what it does.
How they taste
- Manuka is earthy and slightly medicinal, with a mineral finish some people take a while to like.
- Sidr is denser and rounder — caramel and malt, with a long finish and none of the sharpness.
- Sidr is usually the easier of the two to eat by the spoonful.
Which should you buy
If you want a number on a jar that you can verify independently, buy Manuka. That system exists and it works.
If you want a honey that is genuinely scarce, tastes of somewhere specific, and comes from a supply chain small enough that a seller can tell you the valley and the season, that is the case for Sidr. Neither is a medicine. Both are very good honey.

Is Sidr honey stronger than Manuka?
In one 2011 laboratory comparison, Yemeni Sidr needed a lower concentration than Manuka to inhibit Gram-positive bacteria. That is a measurement of the honey in a dish, not evidence that eating it does anything, and Manuka has far more published research behind it overall.
Why is Sidr honey more expensive than Manuka?
The Sidr tree flowers for only a few weeks a year and grows wild rather than in managed plantations, so yields per hive are small. Manuka is produced at industrial scale by comparison.
Does Sidr honey have a UMF rating?
No. UMF and MGO are Manuka grading systems and there is no equivalent for Sidr. Ask the seller for the valley of origin and the harvest season instead.
